NORTH PERTH – Two snowmobile clubs are coming together to raise money to fight cancer.
The Palmerston Snow Kings and the Maitland Valley Snowmobile Club are launching the Ride for Cancer Snowmobile Run on Saturday, Jan. 28.
It’s also a poker run, with all proceeds being split between the Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Foundation and the Snowmobile Ride for Dad fund, a prostate cancer organization.
“It’s going to be great, we’re hoping to make it a yearly thing,” said Ron Ash, vice-president of the Palmerston club and grooming co-ordinator. “Cancer affects everybody.”
Registration and breakfast runs from 8-10 a.m. at the Palmerston clubhouse. A $40 entry fee covers registration, two meals and the first poker hand. Additional hands can be bought for $5.
The run is about 80 miles in length, with lunch included at the Listowel clubhouse.
It finishes back at the Palmerston clubhouse where hands must be in by 4 p.m.
Ash said the event is open to anyone regardless if they are a member of one of the clubs. A snowmobile and the proper permits are required.
The grand prize, drawn from all entries, is a weekend at Benmiller Inn and Spa in Goderich. The highest ladies hand prize is a spa package at the Inn and the highest men’s hand is a gift certificate for Ideal Supply in Listowel.
Combined the two clubs currently have over 700 members, according to Ash.
Also in support of cancer research, the groomer for the trails in Palmerston was painted bright pink with graphics on it in December to recognize breast cancer.
