A suspect discovered the hard way that burying himself in snow was not a good way to evade arrest.
On Sunday, Jan. 31 at around 12:30 a.m., a Perth County OPP officer on patrol observed a pickup truck without rear lights on Clayton St. E. in Listowel.
When the officer activated the cruiser’s emergency lights and siren to stop the truck, the driver turned off the truck’s headlights and accelerated. The officer pursued the truck south on Tremaine Ave. S., west on Rocher Rd. and south on Wallace Ave. S., where it became stuck in a ditch as the driver attempted to go around cement barriers at Line 84.
The driver and a passenger ran from the vehicle while a third passenger remained in the truck. Police caught and detained both passengers, and the driver fled on foot. The OPP Western Region Canine Unit found him trying to hide near Highway 23 – he had travelled through a river and buried himself up to his neck in snow in an attempt to hide from police. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Listowel for treatment of hypothermia.
Police located a stolen Arctic Cat snowmobile in the box of the truck and a container with suspected methamphetamine inside the truck.
The driver is a 23-year-old man from the Brussels area. He and a 20-year-old male passenger from Palmerston were arrested for possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance. Both were held in custody pending bail hearings. The 18-year-old female passenger from Hanover was arrested for the same offences and released on a promise to appear.
Police continue to investigate this incident.
