Peewee AEs win WOAA title

Listowel Cyclones Peewee AE won the league championship on Sunday, Jan. 31. In front, goalie Jacob Nethercott. The Listowel Peewee AE Cyclones swept the Saugeen Shores Storm in three straight games to take the WOAA’s top spot. The Cyclones will now move on to the quarter-finals of the OMHA playdowns.
In game one on Sunday, Jan. 24 at the Plex in Port Elgin the Cyclones downed the Storm with a score of 6-1. Scoring for the Cyclones were Tyler Russell with 2 goals and 3 assists, Austin Service with 2 goals and 1 assist, Riley Thompson with 1 goal and 1 assist, Ben Bowman with 1 goal, and 1 assist going to Jason Bulmer. Jacob Nethercott played fantastic in net for the Cycs.
Game two of the series at the Listowel Memorial Arena on Saturday, Jan. 30 saw the Cyclones take a two game lead with a 6-3 win. Scoring for the Cyclones were Russell with 3 goals, Reese Johnson 1 goal 2 assists, Eric Sousa 1 goal 2 assists, Wade McPhee 1 goal, Riley Thompson 3 assists, Lane Buchanan 2 assists, and Cope Lucas 1 assist.
Game three in Port Elgin on Sunday, Jan. 31 was the toughest game of the series for the Cyclones. Down 3-0 after two periods, things didn’t look good for the Cyclones. Once the team hit the ice in the third it was no looking back.
Thirty-seven seconds into the period Russell shot one in behind the Storm goalie with a helper going to Thompson and just a minute later, Johnson scored with Thompson assisting.
With 44 seconds remaining on the clock Thompson tied it up with an assist from Johnson, which sent the game into overtime.
The Cyclones came on strong and after only 1:33 on the clock, Cope Lucas tallied the winner with help from Brendon Hall and Johnson.
This was a great team effort by all.
