KINCARDINE – The Listowel Cyclones proved defence does win championships.
The Peewee Rep minor hockey team won the Kincardine regional Silver Stick ‘B’ tournament by surrendering just one goal over 15 periods of hockey.
They only allowed 34 shots against in the five games they played Dec. 27-30. Listowel defeated the Goderich Sailors 2-0 in the title game.
The club began the tournament with goalie Nick O’Grady out of action for the first two games with the flu. Affiliated player Luke Brubacher stepped up and recorded shutouts in both of Tuesday’s games as the Cyclones defeated the Hanover Barons and Erin Hillsburg by identical 5-0 scores.
Back in the lineup on Thursday, O’Grady led Listowel to a 3-1 win over the Ayr Flames.
That win launched the Cyclones into the semifinals where they defeated the hometown Kincardine Kinucks 4-0.
Listowel and Goderich – league rivals – started the final with end-to-end action, forcing both goaltenders to make nice saves.
The Cyclones managed to score twice and came away as the 2011 regional Silver Stick ‘B’ champions.... Please read more in this weeks Listowel Banner
