Heading into the post-season, what’s Listowel’s game plan?
“Just keep playing how we are,” said goalie Ben Nelson.
Nelson and the first-place high school boys’ hockey team shut out the Stratford Northwestern Huskies 2-0 last Wednesday, Feb. 10.
He turned aside every shot the visitors fired at his net, but was also the beneficiary of strong play by his teammates.
“(Northwestern’s) pretty tough, we just played pretty good,” Nelson said.
The Lightning had several glorious scoring chances, including a shorthanded breakaway for George McKeown, but were thwarted until Justin Jacklin redirected a Luke Binning pass for the game’s first marker.
Binning was later crushed by a hit from behind, which his teammates took exception to.
A scheduled game last Friday, Feb. 12 against the Stratford Central Rams was cancelled since the school could not field a full roster.
That concludes the regular season, and with the pair of wins Listowel finished in top spot in the Huron-Perth Conference.
Now it’s on to the quarter-finals against the St. Mikes Warriors.
GIRLS
The girls’ team wraps up the regular season with a pair of games, first at home today (Wednesday, Feb. 17) at 9 a.m. against the St. Mike’s Warriors.
On Thursday they’ll be riding the bus to Exeter for a 1 p.m. clash with the South Huron Panthers.
Their quarter-final match-up will depend on the outcome of these two contests.
