WATERLOO – Colton Wolfe-Sabo converted on a Waterloo Siskins power play at 11:39 of the first period, and it turned out to be the difference in a 3-0 home victory over Listowel.
The Siskins added an even strength goal on a turnover and a shorthanded tally during the Sunday, Feb. 21 game at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, all the offence they would need despite being outshot by the Cyclones 29-28.
From Listowel’s perspective, the loss still meant going two for three on the busy Midwestern Junior B weekend schedule.
They captured a 4-3 win at home on Friday, Feb. 19 over the Elmira Sugar Kings and Eric Deckers scored in overtime in Guelph the following night for another 4-3 triumph, this time over the Hurricanes.
“It was nice to get that goal and beat them,” said Dan Mohle, acquired from Guelph earlier in the season along with teammate Ken Rolph.
The pair were instrumental in the win over their former team; Mohle opened the scoring and Rolph provided the tying marker with a mere 1:55 to go while on the power play.
James Prigione’s performance in goal sparked the club to the win over Elmira as he made 49 saves.
Another 32 stop showing the following night prompted the coaching staff to start Brock Hansell against a robust Siskins squad.
Miles MacLean scored the teddy tally against Elmira – the first goal of the third annual Teddy Bear Toss for the North Perth Hospice – his 27th on the season.
Mohle, Chris Holmes and Bobby Cook also hit the twine.
Drew Davidson was the other goal scorer in Guelph.
“I guess we’re happy with four points, would have liked to have six but I thought we battled hard for the most part,” Mohle said.
Now it’s on to the final weekend of the regular season and there’s still much to be decided in the conference.
The Cyclones (26-22-1) will first welcome the Hurricanes (14-28-5) to Listowel Memorial Arena on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
Then they close out the schedule against the Sugar Kings (20-25-5) at the Woolwich Memorial Centre in Elmira on Sunday at 7 p.m.
Brantford and Waterloo are still battling it out for first place, Listowel and Cambridge for third, Stratford and Elmira for fifth and Kitchener and Guelph for seventh.
The Cyclone’s quarter-final opponent will remain a mystery until the final games are played out, but they are guaranteed home ice advantage.
