WINGHAM – Up against some stiff competition at the Huron-Perth championship tournament, the Listowel Lightning finished fourth.
The high school girls’ hockey team lost its semifinal 6-1 to the host Madill Mustangs, then were defeated 5-3 by the South Huron Panthers in the bronze-medal game.
The setbacks at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex in Wingham weren’t the end of the world as the group still advances to WOSSAA today (March 10) at the Stratford Rotary Complex.
“We are putting our last two losses behind us and focusing on what we need to do at WOSSAA,” said defenceman Kelsey Young. “We are all pumped and can’t wait to play.”
Centre Chelsey Draker netted Listowel’s goal against Madill from left winger Laken Smith.
Draker, Smith and Vanessa Armstrong – with a top shelf snipe – scored against South Huron with assists to Kelsey Espensen, Lauren Beirnes, Taylor Gilkinson and Katie Young.
Madill, with a 5-2 win over St. Mike’s, took H-P gold.
