The Listowel Legionnaires torched South London’s starting pitcher Ian Dick for six runs over five innings, but the focus of the game shifted to concern for outfielder Andrew Botten.
Tyler Kellum led off the fifth with a soaring fly ball to centre, but Botten lost the ball in the blinding sun.
It came down and cracked him in the face, knocking him out of commission and delaying the game.
Having no bench players and trailing 11-4, the game was called after seven innings, handing Listowel (3-3) the victory.
The Legionnaires continued their offensive assault on opposing pitchers in the Thames Valley senior league, but tightened up considerably on the defensive side.
“We played a lot better than the last two weeks, a lot less errors on the infield, can’t complain about that,” said centre-fielder and two-hole hitter Dave Brooks.
He scored the second of a three-run first inning for the home side after being hit by a pitch and brought home on a Cody Newbigging single.
Curtis Harding and Kellum scored the other two runs in what’s proving to be an effective top of the order.
After the Lynx drew even at three runs apiece, Newbigging plated Listowel’s fourth run on a wild pitch.
McCalla Sturgeon scattered 10 hits and picked up the win on the mound with seven innings of work. His team put things out of reach in the sixth.
“It’s important that we (hit well), apparently it’s high scoring games in this league,” Brooks said, referencing the recent final scores.
Newbigging singled to cash Kellum, then Sturgeon walked and Derek Fraser belted a long double off the fence.
Dustin Gilkinson brought home Fraser with a single, and pinch hitter David Ellison drew a walk in his first appearance for the black, grey and green.
Sturgeon retired the Lynx in order in the top of the seventh to close out the game.
The Byron Bulldogs (0-6-1) visit the John Bell south diamond at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 26.
