Hockey Hall of Fame member Marcel Dionne headlines this summer’s version of the Listowel Charity Golf Classic.
The annual event returns to the Listowel Golf Club in eight days, with a flock of distinguished names scheduled to participate.
Hockey is a major theme, with current and former players, scouts and coaches from all levels of the sport hitting the links.
The format is groups of six: five members on a team to be joined by one of the celebrities on the list.
CGC committee member Mike Town highlighted that celebrities are scheduled to appear, so barring any setbacks, some notables on the roster are current NHLers Nick Spaling (Nashville), Justin Peters (Carolina), Cal O’Reilly (Nashville), Ryan O’Reilly (Colorado) and Krys Barch (Dallas).
Dionne’s brother and Stanley Cup champion Gilbert Dionne is slated to be there, as is Hall of Fame member Harry Howell.
Local connections will be present as well: former Listowel Jr. B player Brett MacLean and Listowel natives Jason Brooks of the OHL’s Guelph Storm and Larry Huras of the Swiss league champion SC Bern hockey club.
Brooks and Paul McIntosh, pro scout with the NHL’s Dallas Stars, are honorary co-chairs of the 2010 CGC.
Palmerston’s Jim Reid, a former CFL player, is another local celebrity.
The CGC is a full-day event on Thursday, July 15, with golf followed by dinner and a silent auction.
Proceeds are going to the North Perth Sports For Kids Fund, aimed at financially assisting local young athletes who are unable to participate in sports due to registration or equipment costs. It’s run through the Stratford and Perth County Community Foundation.
The tournament is just about full, but there’s still room to squeeze in two more groups, so if interested call organizer Carolyn Chapman at 519-291-5916.
